How to Listen to Quran Radio Online, Free, on Any Device

By The Sur Music team, Mousa International Software House

Plenty of people start the morning with a recitation playing in the background. Plenty more put it on while cooking, driving or falling asleep. A live Quran station is the easiest way to do that, because there is nothing to download and nothing to line up. You press play and it keeps going.

Here is how to get the most out of it.

Start from the list, not a search

Open the Quran radio page and you will see live stations from different countries. Every one of them is run by someone else: an institution, a mosque or a broadcaster. We only list them. Tap a name and the recitation usually starts within a few seconds.

If you are not sure which to pick, give three of them a minute each. Reciters differ a lot. Some read slowly and with long pauses, some are quicker, and some stations play a translation between recitations. You will know what suits you almost at once.

Listen for a minute before you settle

Names can be misleading. A station called "Quran" may turn out to be a talk channel, and a lecture station may switch to recitation in the evening. If it is not what you wanted, go back to the list and try the next one. It costs nothing.

Keeping it going while you do something else

On a computer, leave the tab open and use other tabs as normal. The audio carries on. Inside Sur Music, moving to another page does not restart the station either, so you can open a country page or the Naat page without losing what you are hearing.

Phones are less predictable. Some of them pause a browser as soon as the screen locks, mostly because of battery saving. If that happens to you, look in your phone's battery settings and allow your browser to run in the background.

How much data does it use?

A typical radio stream uses somewhere between 30 and 60 MB an hour. On home Wi-Fi that is nothing. On a small mobile data package it adds up if you leave it on all day, so it is worth switching to Wi-Fi for the long sessions.

When a station stops

Live streams go down now and then. The station might be doing maintenance, or its server might be busy. Nothing on your side is broken. Try a different station from the same list, and if you are curious about the reasons, we wrote a short guide on why a radio station keeps stopping.

A few small habits

  • Keep the volume low at night. Recitation is easy to fall asleep to, but a sudden loud station after an ad break is not.
  • Make a short list of the two or three stations you come back to. With a free account you can tap the star next to a station to save it as a favourite.
  • Try the same recitation at different times. A slow reading is lovely in the morning and a faster one suits a car journey better. There is no right answer.

A last word on trust: because other people run these stations, we cannot promise what they will broadcast on a particular day. If you ever hear something that does not belong on a Quran station, tell us and we will look at it.
