Missing Home? How to Listen to Your Country's Radio From Abroad
By The Sur Music team, Mousa International Software House
Anyone who has lived far from home knows the small things you miss. Not the big events, but the voice of a presenter you grew up with, the ads for shops you know, a song that every taxi in your city used to play.
Radio is one of the easiest ways to get a little of that back. These stations already broadcast online, and you can listen from anywhere.
Begin with your country page
We have a page for countries all over the world. Start with yours, for example Pakistan, India, the UK, the USA, Canada or Australia. If your country is not in that list, the full list is grouped by region.
Only countries that actually have stations to play get a page, so if you see yours, it has something for you.
Look for your language, not just your country
Many people do not want "radio from India", they want a Malayalam or Punjabi station. We keep language and music pages for this:
These stations are often not in the capital city at all. A small FM station in a regional town can be the one that sounds most like home.
Use the news stations, but check the clock
If you want to stay close to what is happening back home, live news and talk stations are good for that. Remember the time difference. A morning show in Lahore is the middle of the night in New York, and the station you want might be playing a repeat when you tune in.
Why some stations will not play for you
A few stations only allow listeners from their own country. This is the station's choice, usually because of licensing for music or sport. If one refuses to play, it is not a fault in your phone or in our site. Try another station from the same page, and you will usually find several that work anywhere.
Small tips from the other side of the world
- Search by the name of your city or a station you remember. The search page works with names and places.
- Sunday and festival days often have special programmes. It is worth leaving a favourite station on during Eid or Diwali, whichever you celebrate.
- If you live with family, put the radio on a speaker in the kitchen. It is surprising how much it changes the feel of a house.
Radio does not replace home, but it makes the distance feel a bit smaller. If there is a station from your country that you cannot find here, send us its name and we will try to add it.
