Radio for Studying and Working: Lo-fi, Classical and Jazz

By The Sur Music team, Mousa International Software House

Anyone who works from a laptop knows the problem. Silence can feel heavy, and music with words pulls your attention away from the page. A good background radio can sit in between.

This guide is about what kind of station works, and why live radio is a handy choice.

Why live radio rather than a playlist

With a playlist you tend to stop and skip. With a station, someone else has already picked the next song, so you can stay with your work. The stream runs for hours without you touching anything.

Three kinds of station that work well

Lo-fi. Soft beats, no lyrics, slow tempo. It is popular with students and programmers because it hardly changes. Try the lo-fi radio page.

Classical. Piano, strings and orchestra. It is calm and has no words, which suits reading and writing. Try classical radio.

Jazz. Smooth jazz is good for an afternoon of emails or design work. It is a little livelier than lo-fi without being distracting. Try jazz radio.

If you want something with a little more energy while you do something repetitive, such as tidying a spreadsheet, dance or pop can help.

What to avoid while concentrating

  • Songs in a language you understand well. The words compete with your own thoughts.
  • Talk and news stations, if you are writing or studying. You will start listening instead of working. They are great for chores, though.
  • Very loud stations. Keep the volume low enough that you can hear yourself think.

Tips that actually help

  1. Choose one station before you start and stay with it. Hunting for a better one is just a way to put work off.
  2. Work in blocks of 25 to 45 minutes, then take a short break away from the screen.
  3. Use headphones in a shared space.
  4. If a station stops, switch to another one from the same page and carry on. This guide explains why it happens.

Working in the evening or at night

For late sessions, lower the volume and pick a slow station. Sleep matters more than one more hour of work, so set a time to switch off.

Something calmer for the rest of the day

When you finish, try a different mood. Naat, Sufi and Quran stations are favourites for winding down, and qawwali is perfect if you want something more moving.
